Engineering resilience through erosion protection design
The World Bank (WB), Urban Development Project (PDU), and the Ministry of Urbanism and Habitat enlisted UNOPS to combat the advancing erosion threatening Kananga's critical urban infrastructure. With national roads, universities, markets, and vital public spaces at risk, the project aimed to safeguard the city’s socio-economic stability and development. UNOPS entrusted WSP to design innovative and sustainable solutions to address eight major erosion gullies, ensuring the long-term resilience of Kananga's infrastructure and community well-being.

Focused on stabilizing severe erosion near the airport area, Tumbuluku’s rehabilitation included protective measures to secure access roads and prevent further land degradation.

Developed erosion control systems to safeguard Monusco's operational facilities, prioritizing land stabilization and drainage to protect critical airport support zones.
SNCC RN1 Aéroport: Gare Centrale Ville
Addressed erosion threatening the main railway line and surrounding infrastructure, ensuring the continuity of transport services vital for Kananga's economic activities.
Université de Kasaï
Implemented measures to protect campus facilities from progressive erosion, enhancing the safety and usability of learning spaces for thousands of students and staff.
Commerce et Tshisekedi
Reinforced market and commercial areas with erosion barriers to secure public spaces, preserving livelihoods and ensuring the safety of vendors and customers.
Division Provinciale Hygiène
Designed systems to protect essential health and sanitation facilities, safeguarding critical public services from erosion-induced disruptions.
